Donate to those who will benefit most

November 16th, 2009

I love libraries. I remember as a young girl my mother taking me to the library in San Diego CA where I grew up and getting books for me to read. I was a voracious reader and my mom had to work hard to get me enough reading material.

Today I make a trip to the library with my children in tow usually once a week. I have always wanted to be a librarian when I grew up :)

One day as my husband and I were traveling for his photography business we came upon a library in a small southern Utah town and I discovered my true passion. It was a Carnegie library. I had never heard the story of Carnegie libraries and was truly inspired.

Andrew Carnegie grew up in Scotland and immigrated to America. He worked for the telegraph company of Colonel James Anderson who every Saturday would open his personal library to the working boys. Mr. Carnegie as a young man took advantage of this generosity and improved his station in life because of this.

Carnegie believed in giving to the “industrious and ambitious; not those who need everything done for them, but those who, being most anxious and able to help themselves, deserve and will be benefited by help from others.” I love this because a book is hard work, but gives ample rewards to those willing to pay the price.

“Let there be light”

November 15th, 2009

Andrew Carnegie over 100 years ago became known as the Patron Saint of Libraries by funding the building of over 2500 libraries world wide. At the opening to each was the statement “let there be light”. What a better way to increase the light in this world then through free libraries. Libraries bring light to those seeking learning.

Moms increasing literacy is dedicated to increasing the light of this world through 2500 Donkey cart libraries. From the untouchable children of India to the mountain children of South America donkey mobile libraries are the answer to getting books into the hands of children around the world.

Won’t you join me in this adventure?

Donkeys boost Ethiopian literacy

“Donkey library founder Yohannes Gebregiorgis holds his young audience captive with his readings. Yohannes emigrated to the United States half a lifetime ago. He became an American citizen. But he came back, giving up a comfortable life as a children’s librarian in San Francisco, because it bothered him that while Ethiopian kids may go to school, they have no books.”
